My motivation for cycling over 700km from Paris to Nice in September 2019 is well covered in earlier blogs and was not a mid life crisis as some have suggested! In fact I am already recruiting Paris2Nicers for 2020.
Over the last few weeks I have taken 14 flights primarily with work and set down in Germany, Georgia, Qatar, France, Belgium and Luxembourg and numerous cities in each country. I have clocked over 500km cycling and sweated many sessions in the Gym and at home. I have had lows and highs but more of the latter thankfully.
It’s my second year without my Dad on Father’s day and it was as sad and lonely as last year without him. I spent the day in beautiful Donegal in a place my Dad loved, surrounded by the Bluestack Mountains and stunning Lough Eske Lake. It poured rain and was wet and humid, like my heart.
Last weekend I had the pleasure of joining the legal eagles of Ireland to fundraise for homelessness by participating in the Calcutta Cycle Sportive. It was a lovely Saturday morning and the atmosphere was electric. I finished the 50km cycle 40 minutes quicker than last year in two hours, eight minutes at an average speed of 23.3km an hour.
I had a good day today, the sun shone, work was productive, I climbed the hill of Howth to the summit with relative ease and my ulcerative colitis is responding to the new addition of corticosteroids to my usual daily medication routine. I’ve been in remission with ulcerative colitis for nearly two years and how easy one forgets the limitations it imposes on your life. I’m currently having a gentle reminder.
If you read my blog then you'll know that I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease just over four years ago. In August, I was in the hospital for a routine check-up and met a new doctor on the team. We were chatting about my case for a while and all seemed ok. Two weeks later, I received a letter in the post informing me that I had an appointment to have a colonoscopy done two days later!
