Cycle4CrohnsColitis was setup in February, 2019 by Attracta O’Regan, Ultan Bannon, Dr. Aoibhlinn O’Toole, Mary Forry and Dr. Karen Boland.
The primary objective of Cycle4CrohnsColitis is to fund a Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Fellowship. This Fellowship doctor will provide -
- One-to-one patient care and support for people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
- Research the effects of this incurable disease on the day-to-day lives of those who suffer with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis*
*Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the umbrella term used to describe disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are IBDs.
A patient care and support service is not currently available in Ireland and would radically change the isolation and untreated side effects for people with inflammatory bowel disease.
The research under this fellowship will be published and will assist inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) professionals and patients in terms of future supports. The supports are badly needed to provide dignity, normality and give people a quality of life. 49% of people have
lost or had to leave their job because of their illness.
Change can only ever arise where it is informed by hard facts and the verifiable data. This research will deliver the data and assist future advocacy campaigns, medical interventions and change in a meaningful and positive way globally.
The secondary objective of this initiative is to generate a public awareness of the implications of this invisible disability. The intended outcomes are -
- Create awareness of the necessity for urgent access to toilet facilities for people with IBD
- The provision of reasonable accommodation by employers in supporting IBD employees to reduce the underemployment and unemployment rates for IBD sufferers in Ireland
€70,000 is required to pay for the IBD Fellowship and this is the minimum target for the Cycle4CrohsColitis Campaign.
This money will be raised through various fundraising initiatives to include Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training events for solicitors, Attracta and Ultan cycling from Paris to Nice in September with the Paris2Nice Charity, corporate donations and sponsorship. The cycle from Paris to Nice will be self funded by Attracta and Ultan with all fundraising monies going direct to the Cycle4CrohnsColitis Fellowship Fund administered by Beaumont Hospital Foundation.
Who are Paris2Nice?
Paris2Nice is a unique and exceptional non-competitive charity cycle that raises much needed funds for charities throughout Ireland. Paris2Nice is designed to be unlike any other charity events and they want the experience of Paris2Nice to be an extraordinary life changing event for each participant.
Totalling just over 700+km in 6 days, the participants range in age, fitness levels and cycling experience. With regular and gradual training and the support of the Paris2Nice team, they guarantee that participants will not only complete the challenge but love the experience too.
This year’s event takes place from the 14th – 19th September 2019 (it's now fully booked), starting off in the beautiful city of Paris and finishing on the iconic Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
Fundraising is an important aspect of the Paris2Nice experience and as well as paying for their own participation costs all participants must raise a minimum of €3,000 for their own chosen charity.
Previous Paris2Nice participants have fundraised beyond their expectations and in the past 7 years upwards of 350 amateur cyclists have raised close to €3.5 million for multiple charities. This exceptional level of fundraising was achieved through the support and encouragement of other team members and the Paris2Nice organisation.
The Paris2Nice charity cycle is organised by Paris2Nice CLG a not-for-profit organisation providing infrastructure and support to enable individuals and charities to participate in the annual organised cycling challenge from Paris to Nice.
What is Beaumont Hospital Foundation?
Beaumont Hospital Foundation works hard to promote the significant medical contribution which Beaumont Hospital makes to the community and to thousands of patients from all over Ireland who access the hospital's many unique medical specialties.
Their goal is to inspire patients and their families, along with members of the Irish public, to make donations in support of vital equipment and services which improve the treatment and care which their staff provide.
Their supporters can direct the funds they raise to benefit any area of the hospital of their choice. This allows funds to be spread across the hospital and facilitates former patients and families in giving back to the area of the hospital where they, or a loved one, was treated.
All funds raised by Cycle4CrohnsColitis will be going to the Cycle4CrohnsColitis Fellowship administered by the Beaumont Hospital Foundation.
